Azores Island Hopping | Faial

25th anniversary trip got off to a rocky start with canceled flights, but here we are wallowing in beautiful Horta. #faial #azores #travel #marinadahorta #25down25togo

Enjoying that famous 'Azores High' with long rambles to get fab views of #Horta. #ilovetheazores #montedaguia

The views get better round every turn. I kid you not. #getoutside ##hiketheazores #montedaguia

Postcard snapshots. #snailmail #happymail

Lucked out with lovely weather for our final morning in #Horta. Even shy Pico shed her layers of clouds to grace us with her presence. Spent our final hours strolling again around #marinadahorta admiring the open air painting gallery. These are created by sailors who crossed the Atlantic, no small feat, and oh what tales they tell. #boats

Most of this week's Inktober was done while on a trip, which is not a problem if you have a plan, and some basic art supplies.

Journal pages

I'm processing the horrible news from Istanbul in my journal. It's a beautiful city with a long and important history, and I was lucky enough to spend time exploring it's marvels several years ago.

Elizabeth Lev: The unheard story of the Sistine Chapel (Video)

This TED talk hits all my sweet spots - a fun combination of art, history, travel and passion. Pour yourself a hot (or cold) beverage and enjoy.

The Sistine Chapel is one of the most iconic buildings on earth — but there's a lot you probably don't know about it. In this tour-de-force talk, art historian Elizabeth Lev guides us across the famous building's ceiling and Michelangelo's vital depiction of traditional stories, showing how the painter reached beyond the religious iconography of the time to chart new artistic waters. Five hundred years after the artist painted it, says Lev, the Sistine Chapel forces us to look around as if it were a mirror and ask, "Who am I, and what role do I play in this great theater of life?"

2015 December Daily Art Project (Video)

I had challenged myself to create art every day in the December, and I did it. As usual I love some pages in my journal better than others, but overall, am so pleased with the creative process and results. Below is a video of the completed pages and the supplies used. I'll be posting individual page photos with write ups in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that.

Taiye Selasi: Don't ask where I'm from, ask where I'm a local (Video)

You know how things all align sometimes? Well, look at what I found while listening to my current fave book.

When someone asks you where you're from … do you sometimes not know how to answer? Writer Taiye Selasi speaks on behalf of "multi-local" people, who feel at home in the town where they grew up, the city they live now and maybe another place or two. "How can I come from a country?" she asks. "How can a human being come from a concept?"

My fave places in Ann Arbor

A trip to A2 is not complete without a visit to my fave haunts. One is Zingerman's Roadhouse.

The food is delish, and I love that the drive through window is an airstream trailer. How cool is that?

Local color that is fun, and the strange thing is that many of the patrons look related. Must be a mid-west thing.

Another fave haunt is in Kerrytown, and that would be Hollander's, my one stop shop for beautiful papers and book binding supplies.

It has always been a wish of mine to attend one of their workshops, but I'm never in town for one I'm interested in taking. Am thinking that I might have to plan a trip to A2 around their schedule next time.

Seriously, these pics do not do justice to the sumptuous papers, so if you are ever in the area, drop in for a visit. Just beware that you might walk out with a lighter wallet than you intended.

As always, click on images to view larger.

Doggie in the window

How much is the doggie in the window?

Today I saw a Lassie kind of dog in a shop window, lying on a bed of keys. If this inspires you to write a short story or a poem, you are welcome.

My fave present this holiday season

The past six weeks have been rather stressful for my family.  My Dad was scheduled for open heart surgery, and at 77 years of age, we were all naturally worried about the procedure.

The surgery on Dec 10 went without a hitch,  and a week later my Dad was discharged on schedule to a rehabilitation center. He has been there for over a week, and expects to be back home by the end of this week. He has good days and tough days, but has been recovering really well. Seeing his face and those of my beautiful nieces is the best present I could have gotten this holiday season.

Happy Holidays

Can you even believe that another year is almost over? Where the heck does the time go?

I hope you've been very nice (and a little bit naughty) this year. Wishing you and your loved ones a Happy Holiday season.

Road Trip to Ann Arbor, MI

We are headed to A2 for the holidays.  I love road trips, and this time we decided to stop overnight in Buffalo, NY. It is always interesting to see what the dining options are in a new town.

This was our best option. Almost missed it as I thought it was a car lube place.

They have interesting details like this door handle to the bathrooms.

It is hard to concentrate on the football game when there is a car flying overhead.
